March 2024

Starting June 1st 2015, couples will have to find a new way to express their eternal love. Parisian authorities decided to remove close to a million padlocks from the Pont des Arts. The famous bridge, also known as the “Love Lock” bridge, is an attraction where tourists write their names on a padlock and attach it to the bridge to symbolize their love.

Love lost

The ban came after part of the bridge collapsed last year because of the weight of the padlocks. The collapsed parts were made of metallic grids, which are now going to be replaced with clear panels to prevent people from attaching padlocks again. This will also reduce the pollution in the river, as the tradition is to throw in the padlock key into the water.

The death of a tradition?

Many have expressed their worry over the new ban, saying that it would cause the death of a tradition that has now been around for more than a decade. Bruno Julliard, the city’s deputy mayor, has offered a safer alternative, asking couples to attach ribbons to the railings instead. This would solve the problem of weight issues, and would definitely be more affordable than a padlock!

Crimes of passion

Residents of the city have long been complaining about the padlock tradition because of the behaviors of illegal padlock vendors. Another often-mentioned problem is that of ugliness. Paris is supposed to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and native Parisians consider the locks to be an ugly covering of a beautiful landmark. The Pont de l’Archeveche will also have locks removed from its grids. So lovers, you better get those ribbons ready!
