When his daughter Emma was one-year-old, Philippe Morgese became a single dad. This came with many difficulties – one of them was learning how to style his daughter’s hair when he had no experience. But he rose to the challenge and now he teaches other single fathers to do the same.
He started off learning slowly
Emma’s hair took some time to grow out, so Morgese started with easy hairstyles using clips. Then as she grew he styled her hair in pigtails.

He soon mastered the craft
He built on his skills and achieved more complicated hairstyles. Philippe enjoys spending time with his little girl and Emma loves having the cool hairstyles. He soon began receiving compliments on his daughter’s hair and other dads asked him for advice.

He decided to share what he learned
Morgese decided it would be easier to teach the dads in person, so he got together a group and taught a class. He saw a good opportunity to give back to his community by teaching other dads to do hair.
“I get a lot of credit for doing her hair and hear compliments about my role as a father because of it,” he said. “I want other dads to be able to experience that” he said.

He is teaching a free class
Morgese reached out to local beauty school called International Academy and secured a space to hold a regular class. Then, he arranged a date and promoted the class through Facebook. He decided to make the class free because he “didn’t want to stop anyone from learning.” For the first class, seven dads showed up with their daughters. They practiced basics like combing, ponytails, buns, and braids. Morgese said: “There was some struggling, but all the dads really put in the effort.”

He liked the result and wanted to keep going
Pleased with the results of the class, Morgese shared photos of the class to social networking site Reddit to hopefully inspire others. He set up a Facebook page for the class called Daddy Daughter Hair Factory and plans to hold more classes. The praise Morgese has gotten for this class has made him feel like a more confident parent.
“I feel like the kudos have made me a better dad,” he said. “When you hear ‘you are such an awesome dad,’ you start to believe it and let go of the mistakes you make as a parent.”
