When Nicki Minaj accepted her MTV Video Music Award, she turned to host Miley Cyrus and uttered the now iconic phrase “And now back to this b***h that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press—Miley, what’s good?” Social media sites exploded and created countless memes and even merchandise based on the moment. Now Minaj is finally explaining why she did it.

It was a dramatic event

This year’s VMAs seemed to inspire a lot of drama within the pop star community. When Minaj’s video for the song Anaconda was not nominated for video of the year, the pop star used Twitter to express her discontent. She said that she believed that if the video celebrated women with slim bodies, it would have been nominated. She also felt like the show was inconsistent with acknowledging black women’s accomplishments.

The first feud was with Taylor Swift

Swift mistakenly thought that Minaj was targeting her with these comments and referring to her music video for Bad Blood. She tweeted Minaj that she had done nothing but support her and that she should stop pitting women against each other. Minaj responded that Swift must not be reading her tweets. The two women quickly resolved the misunderstanding, but not before pop star Katy Perry weighed in. She said she found it ironic that Swift would talk about women supporting each other when it is rumored that the song Bad Blood is about Perry. Actress Camilla Belle agreed with Perry; Swift’s 2010 song Better Than Revenge is reportedly about Belle. The song’s chorus contains the lyrics “She’s not a saint, and she’s not what you think. She’s an actress woah. But she’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress woah.” This drama eventually died down.

But then Miley Cyrus got involved

In an interview before she hosted the award show, Cyrus accused Minaj of being upset that she did not get nominated and making the whole thing about her. Minaj waited until the show to respond publicly. In a new interview with The New York Times Magazine, Minaj thinks that Cyrus likes to celebrate black culture without caring about black issues.

“The fact that you feel upset about me speaking on something that affects black women makes me feel like you have some big balls,” she said. “You’re in videos with black men, and you’re bringing out black women on your stages, but you don’t want to know how black women feel about something that’s so important? Come on, you can’t want the good without the bad. If you want to enjoy our culture and our lifestyle, bond with us, dance with us, have fun with us, twerk with us, rap with us, then you should also want to know what affects us, what is bothering us, what we feel is unfair to us. You shouldn’t not want to know that.”
