Before the MTV Video Music Awards aired, there was controversy surrounding the show. Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” video was not nominated for Video of the Year award. Minaj was not happy about it. She got into a minor disagreement with Taylor Swift over the issue, but the two quickly made up and even performed together during the opening of the show. Pop star Miley Cyrus was not so lucky.

Battle Of The Pop Stars

When her video was snubbed, Minaj tweeted “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year” and “If I was a different ‘kind’ of artist, ‘Anaconda’ would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well.” Cyrus, who was this year’s host, gave an interview to the New York Times where she accused Minaj of starting a pop star war and that she had lost focus of the issue. “If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself” she told the newspaper. “Say: ‘This is the reason why I think it’s important to be nominated. There’re girls everywhere with this body type…You made it about you. Not to sound like a b**ch, but that’s like, ‘Eh, I didn’t get my VMA.‘”

Nicki Minaj Did Not Let That Slide

Though “Anaconda” was not nominated for Video of the Year, it did end up winning Best Hip Hop Video. When the rapper went to accept her award, the speech started out standard enough. She thanked her fans, urged them to follow their dreams, and told girls not to let boys hold them back. But when it was time to cut back to Cyrus, she said: “And now, back to this b**** that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press. Miley, what’s good?

Cyrus Was Caught Completely Off Guard

It was clear by her reaction that Cyrus was not expecting to be called out. She quickly recovered and responded: “Hey, we’re all in this industry. We all do interviews and we all know how they manipulate s**t. Nicki, congratu-f***in’-lations.” Minaj’s microphone was abruptly turned off, but she was seen mouthing “Don’t play with me, b****.”

The Internet Loved It

After the heated exchange, Cyrus resumed hosting the show. When she announced that voting was still open for the Artist to Watch Award, she noted “I lost this award back in 2008.” She then turned to the rapper and snapped. “Whatever. Because it’s no big deal! It’s just an award, and I persevered!”. Comedian Rebel Wilson was standing behind Minaj when it occurred and her face basically sums up how everyone felt about the moment.
