Curtis Jackson, commonly known as 50 Cent, accused the law firm of Garvey Schubert Barer of giving him a poor representation during a legal battle against a headphone company called Sleek Audio with whom he was in litigation. The rapper filed a complaint in the Connecticut bankruptcy court requesting $75 million in damages.

A bad headphone deal

50 believes that his former lawyers did a terrible job representing him during his legal battle. In 2010, 50 and Sleek Audio partnered to develop a headphone line called Sleek by 50 to compete with Dr. Dre’s Beats by Dre. Sleek Audio missed its launch deadline and never marketed the headphones. 50 Cent consequently decided to create his own company called SMS Audio, and to market the headphones. The rapper claims that his former lawyers assured him that his action was not an intellectual property rights violation.

A battle with high-stakes

50 Cent was engaged in a legal battle with Sleek. The company ultimately won and the rapper was ordered to pay Sleek $17.2 for “misappropriating trade secrets, breaching his fiduciary duty owed to Sleek, participating in a civil conspiracy, breaching his confidentiality agreement with Sleek, and being unjustly enriched.” Jackson blames Garvey Schubert Barer for failing to “employ the requisite knowledge and skill necessary to confront the circumstances of the case.”

In July, 50 Cent filed for bankruptcy after he was ordered to pay $5 million to Lastonia Leviston, the mother of his rival Rick Ross’ child. The rapper now wants his former lawyers to pay him $75 million in damages, $25 million in actual damages, and $50 million in punitive damages.

His former lawyers do not believe they are at fault

The law firm issued the following statement in response to the lawsuit:

“We understand that Mr. Jackson is disappointed in the outcome of Sleek Audio’s arbitration against him. However, Mr. Jackson’s complaint against GSB omits a number of relevant facts and misstates a number of others, and we will respond to the allegations in accordance with the court’s rules. Our attorneys properly counseled Mr. Jackson and his sophisticated team of financial and operational advisors about the transactions and the arbitrations with Sleek. Unfortunately, the arbitrator in the Sleek case found Mr. Jackson responsible for his actions and the actions of those who performed services for him or his companies. We look forward to demonstrating that our attorneys handled the Sleek matters appropriately in all aspects.”
