Zendaya was honored in a very special way. On September 26th, she hosted the Barbie™ Rock ‘N Royals Concert Experience, an event that encourages children to raise their voices and also benefits the VH1 Save The Music Foundation. At the event, she was presented with a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll in the style of her 2015 Oscars look.

A unique honor

“We are so excited to honor Zendaya with this one-of-a-kind doll as she encourages girls to raise their voices and inspires us to #BeSuper,” the Barbie team said on Instagram, sharing a sketch of the doll. The Zendaya doll will not be made available to the public, so it is a very special and unique present for the young star.

This is the look that caused controversy

Zendaya’s look at the Oscars caused controversy, particularly her hair.  She wore faux dreadlocks to celebrate her culture and ethnicity.  Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic commented that the hairstyle made her look like she smelled like patchouli oil and weed.  Zendaya posted a long response on her Instagram:

“There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful. Someone said something about my hair at the Oscars that left me in awe. Not because I was relishing in rave outfit reviews, but because I was hit with ignorant slurs and pure disrespect. To say that an 18-year-old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or “weed” is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive. I don’t usually feel the need to respond to negative things but certain remarks cannot go unchecked.”

Zendaya loves the doll

The look has gone from being mocked to being honored in a wonderful way. The starlet was extremely grateful for the present.

“When I was little I couldn’t find a Barbie that looked like me, my…how times have changed” she gushed.  I’m excited to be a part of the new direction the Barbie brand is headed, specifically how they are celebrating diversity in the line and encouraging kids to raise their voices.  It’s a positive message to send to my fans, including my nieces who are coming with me to the concert.”

She thanked Barbie for the honor

“Thank you [Barbie] for this honor and for allowing me to be a part of your diversification and expansion of the definition of beauty. Can’t wait to keep doing amazing things with you,” she said.

She also said that the doll’s eyebrows were on fleek.
