The 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) took place at the Durban International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa last Saturday. Some of Africa’s best entertainers were present to celebrate the continent’s rich musical heritage. American comedian Anthony Anderson entertained the 5 000-strong audience with his usual sense of humor.

The Big Winners

Nigerian artists stole the show winning 8 awards. Yemi Alade and Davido respectively won the Best Female and Best Male awards. P-Square took home both the Best Group and the Artist of the Decade prizes. D’banj, who is celebrating his 10th-year anniversary in the industry, won the MAMA Evolution Award, and Mavins won the Song of the Year prize with their hit single Dorobucci. The Personality of the Year Prize was awarded to South African comedian and new host of the Daily ShowTrevor Noah.

The event witnessed exciting performances from some the continent’s biggest acts, including P-Square, DJ Fisherman, NaakmusiQ, DJ Tira, Anselmo Ralph, Danger from Big Nuz, Duncan, Burna Boy, Stonebwoy, Da LES, Diamond, Flavour, Toofan, D’Banj, Davido, Uhuru, Black Motion and Cassper Nyovest.

At the end of the show, Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa, said: “Africa is a continent of the now and the future; tonight was testament to that. MAMA 2015 represented and reflected the abundant amount of creativity and passion this continent breeds.”
