Terry Bollea, known professionally as wrestler Hulk Hogan, has been sacked from the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) after a compromising video of him using racial slurs surfaced. The WWE has removed the wrestler from the hall of fame and any mention of him on their sites. Hogan has since apologized for his words.

Controversy Surrounding The Wrestler

Hogan is in the middle of a lawsuit over his leaked 2006 tape; he is suing Gawker Media for $100 million for invasion of privacy.  A section of the tape was discovered of Hogan angrily ranting about his daughter Brooke. He accused her of sleeping with a black man and fired off several swear words and racial slurs during his tirade. He seemingly admits to being racially prejudiced in the tape – “I mean, I don’t have double standards. I mean, I am a racist, to a point, f–ing n-s. But then when it comes to nice people and s-*t, and whatever…I guess we’re all a little racist” he said.  Adding fuel to the fire, an old radio interview from 2012 was recently uncovered online in which Hogan repeatedly used the n- word. He talked about how Booker T and other stars would call him the word and lamented that he was not able to use the word himself.

A Serious Backlash

Though the sports organization did not explicitly state the reason behind this, they said “WWE is committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds as demonstrated by the diversity of our employees, performers and fans worldwide.” However, Hogan’s lawyer is claiming that he was not sacked but rather resigned. Hogan himself has released this statement: “Eight years ago I used offensive language during a conversation,” Hogan’s statement said. “It was unacceptable for me to have used that offensive language; there is no excuse for it; and I apologise for having done it.  This is not who I am. I believe very strongly that every person in the world is important and should not be treated differently based on race, gender, orientation, religious beliefs or otherwise.  I am disappointed with myself that I used language that is offensive and inconsistent with my own beliefs.”
