The city covers 12,335 acres, with 750 apartment buildings, 12 schools, and more than 100 retail units. The construction cost was estimated around $3.5 billion, yet the city is totally empty.

Mignigo Island has been in the center of a dispute between Uganda and Kenya who both claimed ownership of the island. The waters in that area are rich in Nile Perch, a fish that is heavily exported.
