Cristiano Ronaldo broke a record following a surprising loss against Wolfsburg in the Champions League quarter-finals. Real Madrid bounced back and comfortably beat Eibar 4-0.

30 goals in 6 consecutive seasons

James Rodriguez opened the score in the 5th minute with a free kick that flashed into the bottom corner. Cristiano Ronaldo had an epic performance as usual. The Portuguese forward netted one goal in the 19th minute and provided an assist to Lucas Vásquez (18th minute) and to Jese Rodriguez (38th minute). Real Madrid was up 4-0 at halftime. Cristiano Ronaldo is now the first player to score 30 goals in six successive La Liga seasons.

Focused on the Champions League

Many were surprised by Real Madrid’s Champions League loss. Colombian player James Rodriguez was very criticised for being caught giggling on the sidelines. The 24-year-old forward has not impressed Madrid’s fans since he joined the team from French club Monaco for a hefty €80 million.

“I’d like to avoid it. You learn from these things. It’s an episode that nobody likes, but we have to put it to one side,” French coach Zinedine Zidane told the press. “It’s difficult. He knows that, he knows that things like this can be picked up in two or three seconds. […] He has to learn from these things. What happened does not have a huge influence on what happens now.”

Zidane made 8 changes to the team that suffered the 2-0 defeat in Germany last week, keeping only Ronaldo, Pepe and Casemiro. Skipper Sergio Ramos served a one-game suspension and strikers Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale both rested as Real Madrid is getting ready to face Wolfsburg at Santiago Bernabeu. Zinedine Zidane’s men will try to overturn a two-goal deficit to avoid elimination.
