Toni Maraviglia moved from the U.S. to Kenya to start a program that would support local teachers. She noticed that in some classrooms there would be up to 80 students. When she saw how overwhelmed the teachers were, she came up with the idea of teaching through mobile phone text messages. With co-founder Kago Kagichiri, Toni created Eneza Education in 2011.

Educating millions of kids in rural Africa

Eneza Education’s website states that their mission is to educate 50 million kids across rural Africa through mobile technology.  It is a for-profit business based in Nairobi that offers a virtual tutor and a teacher’s assistant to their clients. Students have access to many services such as tutorials, tips, assessments, a live teacher chat, an online web app, an offline desktop app, and an Android app.

The material meets the national curriculum standards

Most courses are designed for students who are between 10 and 18 years old, and some classes also provide service for adults up to 25 years old who dropped out of school. The courses adhere to Kenya’s national curriculum – the content and technology is created locally and is approved by the regulating curriculum authority. The app offers subjects like math, science, and language. Courses can be purchased through a weekly or monthly plan that costs 10 Kenyan shillings ($0.098).

Eneza Education is expanding

Eneza Education employees believe that they are democratizing education by providing content to some of the most remote areas in the continent. They have reached over 460,000 users spanning over 8,000 schools in Kenya. 30% of these users are not formally enrolled in school and include children in conflict areas of the country. The company is expanding to more countries in Africa; it has begun a pilot in Tanzania and will be launching in Ghana soon.
