Aurora Smith is only six years old. She is still in first grade, but she is already making a difference in her community. “I like to make scarves to help people,” she says. “It makes me feel good.”

Inspired By Her Mother

Aurora noticed that her mother was doing a charity mission with the Mountain View Community Church. Her mother, Leigh Isenhower, volunteered for the non-profit organization called Services to Abused Families (SAFE). Aurora wanted to help as well. She decided to use her hand-crocheted scarves to help raise money for the cause. In addition to scarves, she can wrap headbands and decorate shoes.

Mommy and Me

Aurora learned how to make scarves from her mother, and since the two were working together she named the business Mommy and Me. The name was also inspired by SAFE’s mission of helping several mothers and their children – they provide shelter, school clothing and supplies, and support to families that have survived domestic assault. But Aurora is not being pushed by her mother, she is very self-motivated. “She actually sold them at our church on Sundays between services. She didn’t have prices. She just asked for donations, and some people gave a lot. And some people gave a little,” her mother said.

An Amazing Achievement

So far, Aurora has donated $319 to SAFE. “We get a lot of help from organizations, donors, churches, but when a child steps up, it’s great,” their executive director said.. “We just really appreciate anything big or small, and to us, this is super, super big. It’s not about the numbers.”

But this is not enough for the ambitious young lady. Aurora wants her business to become even bigger. She wants to expand, add more products, sell her scarves at bigger events, and hopes that she will gain more customers during the winter months. Leigh is immensely proud of her daughter’s accomplishments.  “It just really touches my heart. I have two daughters, and I was a single parent for a while,” she said. “And it’s just really great to see that she’s been incredibly resilient and has just a heart of gold.”
