American record producer, rapper and entrepreneur Dr. Dre is finally dropping a long-awaited album entitled Compton. He announced that he will donate the royalties earned from the new album to the city of Compton in California. The money will fund a new performing arts and entertainment facility in his hometown.
Finally Returning To Music
Dr. Dre has kept busy: he is the founder and current CEO of Aftermath Entertainment and Beats Electronics. He has produced albums and overseen the music of rappers like Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Xzibit, 50 Cent, The Game, and Kendrick Lamar. The last album he released was 16 years ago. Four years ago he planned to release his album Detox, but shelved it as the last minute.
“This is something you’re not gonna hear many artists say,” he said. “The reason ‘Detox’ didn’t come out was because I didn’t like it. It wasn’t good. I’m gonna keep it all-the-way 1,000 with you, seriously. I worked my ass off on it, I don’t think I did a good enough job, and I couldn’t do that to my fans and I couldn’t do that to myself, to be perfectly honest with you. I just wasn’t feeling it.”

The Right Thing To Do
“I feel it’s the right thing to do and I hope everybody appreciates the work I put into this album,” Dre said. “I’ve been really trying to do something special for Compton and just couldn’t quite figure out what it was.” He actually got the idea from the city’s mayor, Aja Brown. Compton, California is a well-known city in U.S. pop culture; several hip hop groups and rappers come from the city. It is also known for being plagued by gangs, such as the Bloods, the Crips and the Sureños. When Dr. Dre himself was young, he was forced to transfer schools due to gang violence.

Proud Of His Work
The album is being released on August 7th. It will have 16 new Dr. Dre songs and feature appearances by Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, the Game and Xzibit, and more. Dr. Dre calls this album his grand finale. “During principal photography, I felt myself going to the studio and being so inspired by the movie that I started recording an album,” Dre said on his Beats 1 program earlier this month. “I kept it under wraps, and now the album is finished. It’s bananas…. I’m really proud of this.”
