Pink lakes (yes PINK) are very rare wonders around the world. They are not due to pollution, nor are they giant strawberry milkshakes. The reason the water turns pink is because of the presence of algae called Dunaliella Salina. This type of seaweed is famous for its antioxidant activity. It creates large amounts of reddish pigments called carotenoids that are used in cosmetics and dietary supplements. The water in pink lakes is actually very salty, and most of the pink lakes around the world are subject to salt mining. The salt is collected just by scraping the bottom of the lakes.
