Last June, to everyone’s surprise, rapper Drake premiered on Apple Music’s Beats 1 Radio Show a song that is very popular in the African continent. The song in question was a remix of Wizkid’s Ojuelegba. This remix also featured UK rapper Skepta. Drake never spoke about the reason why he jumped on the track but in an interview published in the 100th issue of FADER magazine, he finally opened up.

“Super-honored” to be on the song

Many were surprised when they first heard the song because there was no prior mention of it. When asked what were his motives behind recording the song with Wizkid and Skpeta, Drake clarified that it was not about expanding his brand to the Nigerian market.

“I just did it because I was in the moment,” he told fader magazine. “I wasn’t thinking like, ‘Oh man, I gotta get my brand up in Nigeria.’[…] Not to say that’s not important. I’m super-honored to be on that song” he politely added.

Other celebrities are loving the song too

Drake is not the first North American celebrity to enjoy Wizkid’s song. Kylie Jenner, the reality TV personality, socialite and model of the moment posted a video of her dancing to Ojuelegba.

A few days earlier, producer Swizz Beatz and his wife, Alicia Keys, shared videos of them jamming to the song as well. Swizz Beatz shared the album cover of Wizkid’s 2014 album, Ayo (Joy) on his Instagram account with the hashtag #vibes. Alicia Keys uploaded on Instagram a video of her dancing and wrote: “the song makes me happy #goodvibes @wizkidayo”.

At the end of the day, it seems like Wizkid is the one who is growing into an international brand.
