Serena Williams completely crushed Maria Sharapova in the semi-finals of the Wimbledon tennis tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 win in just over an hour. This is not surprising since Sharapova has not beaten Williams in 11 years. Now, there is only one match left in the tournament: Saturday’s final against Garbiñe Muguruza. Williams could win her fourth straight Grand Slam victory – which is nicknamed the “Serena Slam” after the last time she achieved it in 2003.

An Amazing Athlete

Ranked at number one in women’s singles tennis, Williams is considered by many to be one of the greatest female tennis players of all time. Williams has won 20 Grand Slam titles in singles, 13 women’s titles in double, and 2 titles in mixed doubles. Her record of 35 Grand Slam titles puts her seventh on the all-time Grand Slam winner’s list. She is the most recent player to have held all four Grand Slam singles titles simultaneously. Williams is also a five-time winner of the WTA Tour Championships. On top of that, she has won four Olympic gold medals.

Some Are Questioning the Lack of Press

After her victory, Williams claimed that “if I was British, I’d be on the front page of the paper now.” It was also pointed out that Sharapova makes more money than Williams. Sharapova was listed as Forbes highest paid female athlete, earning $29.7 million while Serena earned $24.6 million but this is due to Sharapova making more money in endorsements.

Just Focusing on Having Fun

“I’ve been in this stage and I’ve won so many Grand Slam titles,” Williams said. “You know, I’m at a position where I don’t need to win another Wimbledon. I could lose in the final. Sure, I won’t be happy. But I don’t need another Wimbledon title. I don’t need another US Open. I don’t need any titles to make it.  Every time I step out on court, the practice court, the match court, I do look at it as a more fun time because it’s not as much stressful as it was. Getting to 18 titles (to tie Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert on the all-time list of Slam winners) was super stressful for me. It was fun, but I was so stressed out. After that, I’ve just been really enjoying myself.”
