A lion charged and killed a safari guide in Zimbabwe. The incident occurred in the same national park where Cecil the lion was illegally killed last month. Quinn Swales was leading a group of tourists when he was attacked. None of the tourists were hurt.

An Unexpected And Tragic Event

A police spokeswoman, named Charity Charamba, made a statement on Tuesday. On Monday, Swales was leading a photographic walking safari in Hwange National Park and noticed fresh lion spoor. He tracked a pride and found six lions: two females, two cubs and two males. When he was tracking the lions, one of the males attacked him out of the blue.  “One of the lions had cubs and they became hostile. Mr Swales at first managed to scare the lions away but then the male lion later made a U-turn and attacked him,” Charamba said. The parks authority said a collared lion named Nxaha is the one who attacked Swales.

A Tough Year

After Cecil the lion was illegally lured out of the park and hunted by American dentist James Walter Palmer last month, there was outrage all over the world. This put the park in the international spotlight. The collared lions are being monitored for an Oxford University study. Camp Hwange, the safari company that employed Swales, said the 40-year-old guide succumbed to the injuries on the same day he was attacked.
