Cameroon football star Samuel Eto’o added another feather on his cap. He has recently been appointed player-manager of his team, Antalyaspor. The club’s president parted ways with Yusuf Şimşek due to poor results.Antalyaspor was ranked 10th of the league with 17 points heading the 15th week.
A good start
The appointment was announced shortly after Simsek was fired. Eto’o will be a player-manager until the winter break and he will be assisted by youth team coach, Mehmet Uğurlu. Gülteken Gencer, the chairman of Antalyaspor told the press:
“We met with Eto’o just like we met with the coaching team. They are coordinating the training program together […] When a new coach arrives they will return to their regular duties. Mehmet Uğurlu as the coach and Eto’o as captain are training the team together.”
Eto’o scored an equalizer goal in his first game and first win as a player-manager. He has earned the nickname “Baba Eto’o” (Father Eto’o).

Like a fish in water
Eto’o is in his element in Turkey. The 34-year-old striker is Spor Toto Super League’s goal king with 13 goals scored in 14 weeks. His presence in Antalyaspor has also increased the overall attendance when his club plays. Eto’o has a lot of experience to share with his team as a player-manager. He is the most decorated African player of all time and won several championships playing for various elite football teams in Europe. He played for Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea and won the Champions League trophy three times with two different clubs. Referring to his new duties, Eto’o quoted no one other than the great Nelson Mandela:
“I never lose. I either win or learn”
