Superstar Didier Drogba is finally back. After missing the first five games of the 2016 MLS season, the Ivorian striker returned to action in a spectacular way.

Precautionary measures

The Montreal Impact started the football season without their star player. The veteran striker sat out five of his team’s six games in order to avoid playing on artificial turf. Drogba did not want to take the risk to injure himself. According to Adam Braz, Montreal Impact’s technical director, the striker does not feel comfortable playing on artificial turf:

“We saw last year when we played [on turf] in New England, his knee really swelled up and he really had a tough time recovering afterwards for the playoffs,” Braz told the press.

An amazing goal

Drogba finally made his comeback at Toyota Park in a match opposing the Montreal Impact to the Chicago Fire. The 38-year-old player came off the bench at the 50th minute and scored an amazing backheel goal six minutes later, after receiving a pass from Dominic Oduro. Drogba almost scored a second goal but the shot was denied by a diving save by goalkeeper Lampson in the 83rd minute. The star picked up right where he left off last year when he scored 11 goals in 11 regular season games. This return will definitely give the team momentum for the next few games.

“It’s good and I hope that I will get some more games now that I’m training with the team,” Drogba declared. “I think it’s the first time I’ve been training all week with the team since I came back, since February, and it feels good to be back on the team and to have the chance to play like this and to see the atmosphere after the win.”
