The Commonwealth Games have been held every four years since 1930, with a brief break during WWII. Yet, they have never taken place in Africa. That is all about to change – it is confirmed that Durban, South Africa will be the first African city to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
A Major Milestone
The 22nd Commonwealth Games will begin on 18 July 2022 and finish on 30 July 2022. Athletes from over 50 countries, most former British colonies, compete in 22 different sports. An athletics track is being installed at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, which was built for the 2010 Fifa World Cup. “As a movement we stand together to support the very first games on African soil,” said outgoing CGF president Prince Tunku Imran. This milestone could possibly lead to bigger things. Many hope that this event could lead to South Africa bidding to host the Olympics; Cape Town finished third in the 2004 bidding.

A Proven Track Record
Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula was delighted to announce the news. South Africa has a proven track record for organizing major sports events, “Our organisation will be of the highest standard as amply demonstrated by the lovely World Cups in football, rugby and cricket,” Mbalula said to the press. “It was with the vision of hosting events of multi-coded sports like the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games. So we are not going to build entirely a new infrastructure, we will build on top of what we have. It will benefit our athlete development programme.” he added.
