John Boyega went from being unknown to becoming an A-list actor in the making thanks to his impressive performance in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. The 23-year-old actor confirmed his place on the red carpets as he won the Rising Star prize at the 2016 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Film Awards.

 A Rising star

The British and Nigerian actor’s stellar performance as the stormtrooper Finn in the latest Star Wars movie cemented his place in the international movie scene as he beat out competition from more established stars such as 50 Shades of Grey’s Dakota Johnson or the multi-talented Brie Larson. Larson, who was nominated in several categories, was named Best Actress for her role in Room. Unfortunately, she could not make it to the ceremony as she was stuck filming in Australia.

Humble and down to earth

Boyega, who is known for his down-to-earth behavior, accepted the award with humility. As he took the stage in his dapper and well-cut black tuxedo to accept the award, he jokingly called his achievement a fluke:

“First and foremost I want to thank God for this moment. A big thank you for BAFTA for this amazing opportunity, and to the members of the public who have voted. I have not been doing this for a long time. It’s a fluke! […] I’m going to share this award with all the young dreamers who are hard working and are quite frankly amazing. This is to you. This is to your path.”

This is a symbolic win for Boyega, who was facing intense criticism from a few Star Wars fans who were offended by the idea of a black Stormtrooper. “Get used to it” people!
