Papiss Demba Cisse beat Tony Yeboah’s Bundesliga record, and now Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has surpassed both. The Gabonese striker scored his 23rd league goal in the German championship in a match opposing Borussia Dortmund to Werder Bremen.

A great season

Aubameyang, who was named the 2015 African Player of the Year, is now the African player who netted the most goals in a Bundesliga season and still has 6 games left to improve his performance. Aubameyang has scored 36 times in 41 matches in all competitions and now 23 goals in 26 Bundesliga games this year. He is second to Bayern Munich’s Lewandowski.

“It is a great honour for me. I’m proud to have my name written in the history books,” he told the Bundesliga’s official website.

Africans in Germany

Aubameyang surpassed Senegalese star Papiss Cisse and Ghana Legend Tony Yeboah, who respectively scored 22 goals for Freiburg during the 2010/11 season and 20 goals during the 1992/93 season for Eintracht Frankfurt. He is also the second best African goalscorer in Bundesliga history, with 52 goals scored in 91 games for Dortmund. He is still 44 goals behind Ghana’s Tony Yeboah, Africa’s record scorer in Germany, who netted 96 times in 223 matches.
