Adele marked her return to the forefront of the music industry. Released on October 23rd, her latest single Hello occupies the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart its first week. Adele made it past pop artist Justin Bieber, whose single Sorry occupies the second place.

A new record

According to media company Nielsen, the song was downloaded a record 1.11 million times its first week in the United States in an era of declining downloads. Music magazine Billboard states that this is the first time ever that a song generates more than a million downloads in a week. The previous record was held by rapper Flo Rida who sold 636 000 downloads of the song Right Round back in 2009. Adele has had seven singles appear in the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but Hello is the first song of her career to debut at number 1.

A highly-anticipated return

Although Adele’s comeback was highly anticipated, the British singer did not expect such a positive response at all:

“I was so frightened that no one cared,” she said in an interview.

Adele hadn’t released any single since Skyfall in 2012, and her latest album, 21, dates from 2011. Her new album, 25, is scheduled to debut on November 20th. She describes the album as a make-up record instead of a break-up one.

“My last record was a break-up record and if I had to label this one I would call it a make-up record,” she writes. “I’m making up with myself. Making up for lost time. Making up with everything I ever did and never did.”
