Meet Bonsai, an English bulldog rescue. He is less than three months old and suffers from a few rare genetic disorders.

He Suffers from Many Diseases

Bonsai was born with a combination of several genetic disorders including caudal regression syndrome (a disorder that impairs the development of the lower half of the body), sacrocaudal dysgenesis (a malformation of the spine), spina bifida (incomplete closing of the backbone and membranes around the spinal cord), and the “swimmer puppy” syndrome (a condition in which dogs are born with flat chests and abdomens).  He is the first dog known to suffer from caudal regression – it normally only exists in humans.

The Diseases Severely Affect His Life

Due to the disorders he suffers, Bonsai was born with half a spine, no functional pelvis, and tiny contracted hind legs. The swimmer puppy syndrome causes his legs to spread out and flattens his chest, which makes it hard for him to stand and puts pressure on his internal organs.

He Has Endured Surgery

Doctors amputated both of his hind legs and he is now doing well in recovery.
