Mary Maley was on a solo 107-mile kayak journey in Alaska when her trip took an odd turn and ended with her having to hitch a ride home on a sailboat. She took a break to eat lunch when she encountered a bear, who then ate her only form of transportation.
It started out okay
When the bear approached her, Maley remained relatively calm at first. The bear wandered around and she thanked him for not eating her kayak. Then she made the mistake of pepper spraying him; that is when things took a turn for the worse. In revenge, he decided to eat her kayak after all.

She begged him to stop, but he kept on going
Maley repeatedly screamed and shouted at the bear. She attempted to reason with the animal, asking “Why are you doing that? Why are you breaking my kayak?“ She begged him to stop eating it. “Please stop breaking my things!” she plead. Obviously, the bear could not understand. She then resorted to whining about her unfortunate situation. “It’s the end of September. Why are you here? You’re supposed to be asleep.” The lesson learned from this story: do not mess with bears.
