On September 25th, 193 World leaders will meet at the United Nations headquarters in New York for the Sustainable Development Summit. Some of Africa’s biggest names in music recorded an engaging song called Tell Everybody for that event. The artists in question include Becca, Sarkodie, Mafikizolo, Yemi Alade, Diamond, Sauti Sol and Toofan.

Engaging the African youth

Tell Everybody features verses interpreted in different languages spoken in Africa. You can hear the artists singing in English, French, Swahili, Pidgin and Zulu. The song attempts to inspire young Africans to know their rights encompassed in the Global Goals for Sustainable Development document and to hold their governments accountable on reaching all  objectives mentioned in the charter. The United Nations Organization is expecting all world leaders who sign the Sustainable Development Goals to ensure that their message reaches every part of their countries within seven days of being adopted.

Africa’s first crowdsourced song

The song was written, recorded and produced by Africans. In order to capture the voice of young Africans, producers launched a verse writing competition. 5712 songwriters from 24 countries sent their lyrics via their mobile phones and each winner received $500 and a songwriting credit for the work.

“We decided to let the young voices of Africa be heard in this song,”said producer Cobhams Asuquo. “Not only did we love the winning verses, but all the entries informed the vision, lyrics, and sound of the song. The African youth are powerhouses in their own right and collectively, they can make change happen” he added.
