Members of rap group Public Enemy are known for their politically charged lyrics and their activism. When Arizona governor Evan Mecham canceled a state holiday for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s day in 1987, the group wrote a song entitled “By the Time I Get to Arizona” and verbally attacked Mecham. Over the years, their message has not changed. In its latest video entitled Mine Again, the politically conscious rap group pays tribute to the Motherland.

Reconnecting with each African country

Public Enemy presented an ode the continent by naming each African country. The music video celebrates the African continent’s diveristy and beauty though a colorful photographic slideshow as well. “So it’s cool to be black until it’s time to be black? Ain’t never too late to go back and give back, so I let born-afters know I rap for Africa, to give to the motherland, to see what’s mine again” sings group lead Chuck D. “I boarded a plane headstrong, landed with a smile on my face; to give service back to the land that’s our home, I long for coming back to Africa.” adds James Bomb.
