Iconic rapper Nicki Minaj is planning to executive produce and appear in a currently untitled comedy series for ABC Family. The series will be based on her early life and center on her experiences growing up in 1990s Queens, New York. This winter, the pilot will be shot in Minaj’s hometown. If all goes according to plan, the series will continue and air on the network.
The show will share her unique upbringing
The 32-year-old rapper was born in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was five years old. She made an incredible journey to become the acclaimed celebrity she now is. “Nicki Minaj is a force to be reckoned with at everything she touches,” said ABC Family’s EVP Programming and Development Karey Burke. “Nicki is an international superstar, yet not everyone knows how inspiring and hilarious her true story is, and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”

She did not originally start in music
Believe it or not, Minaj originally aspired to be an actor. She studied the craft at Manhattan’s famous LaGuardia High School. She made her acting debut with a voice role in the animated film Ice Ace: Continental Drift and went on to co-star role in the feature comedy The Other Woman. She still dabbles in acting – she recently completed her first starring movie role in MGM’s Barbershop 3 – but her musical career has been extremely successful.
She is one of the most successful artists today
Minaj is the first solo female artist to have seven singles charting simultaneously on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Her album The Pinkprint, which she is currently on worldwide tour for, became the second-highest-selling female debut of 2014 and arrived at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 and No. 1 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. Her music video for Anaconda set the record for most Vevo views in 24 hours. Plus, she achieved the highest digital sales for any female artist in history with over 50 million track sales and is one of two artists in history to sell 1 million copies of five different songs in one year, the other being Adele.
She is excited
It is unknown what role Minaj will play on the series. It is unlikely that she will play herself; that role will probably go to a much younger actor. But one thing is clear: she is very excited. “This is one of the most unique adventures I’ve ever embarked on,” said Minaj. “I couldn’t be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special.”
