MTV’s 2015 Video Music Awards were full of outrageous outfits and celebrity feuds, but one of the most interesting moments was rapper Kanye’s long winded speech, which included an announcement that he is running for president in 2020.

This Is Not The First Time He Is Causing A Stir

Kanye can make the VMAs very interesting. In 2009, he famously stole the microphone from Taylor Swift when she was accepting her award for Best Female Video and said “Taylor, I’m really happy for you and I’ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.” When he was met with a booing crowd, he shrugged and handed the microphone back. Ever since, viewers have always kept an eye on him to see if he will do anything outrageous. This year, he finally delivered.

He Gave Quite An Odd Speech

On Sunday night, the rapper was a little different than usual. Instead of his usual stoic demeanor, he smiled, laughed, and danced. And when he won the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, he gave an incredibly long acceptance speech with several twists and turns. First, he touched on the importance of artistic freedom of speech. Then it seemed like he was about to apologize for the incident with Swift a few years ago; he mentioned how being a little older and wiser had changed him. But then he abruptly switched gears – “Sometimes I feel like I died for the artist’s opinion. For the artists to be able to have an opinion after they were successful. I’m not no politician, bro.” But when someone in the audience yelled “Kanye for president!” he apparently changed his mind on that last point. “And yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president,” he announced. You can read the full transcript of the speech here.
