President Dwight Eisenhower once said: “If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking… is freedom.” As harsh as this statement could be, the following prisons illustrate Eisenhower’s point fairly well. They are so unusual, that one would want to commit a crime just to visit them in person.

1. Halden Prison, Norway

This summer camp like prison houses about 100 inmates. Their favorite pastimes are sunbathing, playing tennis, and horseback riding. According to the Guardian, the inmate’s reoffending rate was reported at 16% compared to 70% in the rest of Europe.

2. Otago Corrections Facility, New Zealand

This facility has underfloor heating, a few flatscreen televisions, a library, and a gymnasium. The prison is nicknamed “Milton Hilton”.

3. Butner Federal Correctional Institution, USA

This is the home of famous white collar criminals like Bernie Madoff. The correctional center is famous for having excellent medical facilities, especially for cancer treatment.

4. San Antonio Prison, Venezuela

Most of the inmates in this prison do not want to leave. Who would want to leave a place with pools, barbecue pits, music, where overnight guests like the inmate’s children are encouraged to stay and enjoy themselves?

5. San Pedro Prison, Bolivia

What is unique about this prison is that it functions as its own community.  You will find children, restaurants, cafes, hairdressers and even a hotel.

6. Her Majesty’s Prison Addiewell, Scotland

Aranjuez Prison allows children. The facility also offers cells filled with toys. Children can consequently live with their parents during their incarceration.

13. Alderson Federal Prison Camp, USA
