Didier Drogba, or Tito like his mother calls him, does not need any introduction. He is among Africa’s best football players of all time. Through his 17-year career, he’s played professional football in France, England China, Turkey and Canada. He also led the Ivory Coast national team to three World Cups in 2006, 2010 and in 2014. Last August, the Ivorian striker packed his bags and crossed the Atlantic to find a club where he could have more playing time. He signed a contract with the Montreal Impact and after playing in 11 games, Drogba finally shares his thoughts on the current state of the Major League Soccer (MLS).

Some changes need to be made

Drogba, who’s already scored 11 goals in 11 games and won two consecutive Etihad Airways Player of the Month awards, played a critical role in helping the Montreal Impact clinch an MLS playoff spot. During and interview, Drogba shared his opinion on the level of the MLS compared to the European leagues he’s played in. Drogba said that he has seen many good things in the MLS, however, he believes that some changes need to be made before the MLS can be considered among the word’s best leagues.

“The MLS is a good league, with some good teams, and you can see that there’s some good football players here […] But I think if this league wants to be one of the best in the world in the next few years I think there’s a lot of things to improve, like the travelling for the players, and playing on turf surfaces. If you want to compare this league to the English one, to the French, to the Spanish, to the big leagues, it has a lot to do. But I hope the league [will get better] and I think it’s on the way,” he said.

An accomplished player

Drogba is no stranger in the world of international football. He is the all-time top scorer of the Ivory Coast national team. He is the only African football player to score more than 100 goals in the Premier League. He holds the record for the most goals scored in the UEFA Champions League by an African player, with 44 goals. He is also a recipient of the 2013 Golden Foot, an award given to players who stand out for their athletic achievements and for their personality.

Drogba spent most of his career playing for Chelsea (from 2004 to 2012, and during the 2014-15 season), where he scored 164 goals in 381 appearances and helped the club win a memorable Champions League trophy in 2012. During his second spell, he helped his club win the Premier League and the League Cup. In fact, he is the club’s fourth highest goal scorer of all time.
