When a small, 10-week-old puppy named Lisa came to the Humane Society of Silicon Valley in California, it was clear that she had been through a lot. She did not look like other dogs; she was incredibly strange to look at. But that did not matter – she had a great attitude and a big heart. Despite her funny looks, she found the perfect family.

A Hard Life

The shelter staff noted that she was unusual-looking – she had scars all over her face and a case of “cherry eye,” or inflamed eyelids. She needed surgery to fix her condition. “She could be hard to look at,” one staffer named Finnegan Dowling said.

She Did Not Let it Affect Her

Even though she had clearly suffered, Lisa was still in good spirits. She “was a pretty typical wiggly, squirmy, happy puppy,” Dowling said. “She loves other dogs and toys, is ridiculously kissy and she’ll lick your nose clean off … She wasn’t hesitant or frightened or timid at all.” The shelter needed to find the puppy a family that could look past her outside and see her inner beauty.

The Perfect Match

Christine Doblar and her family walked in the door. They had recently lost their Chihuahua and their other dog, a 6-year-old chocolate lab, was depressed. They wanted to find a dog that would cheer everybody up. And that’s when they found Lisa.

Bringing Joy To Their Lives

They fell in love with the puppy’s bright and happy attitude. “She’s pretty funky looking,” Doblar said, but that does not matter to the family. “She just has a wonderful, sparkling personality. The fact that she was going to each of us, and just as loving and exuberant with everyone she greeted … we looked at a few more dogs, but nobody could compare to that.”

They Knew They Wanted Her

When Doblar and her family left the shelter that afternoon, they had not yet made a decision. But the young girls were worried the whole time that somebody else was going to adopt Lisa, so they went back that same day and adopted her. They decided to rename her Lucky, “cause we’re both lucky,” Doblar said.

Settling Into Her Home

Lucky and the family have been settling in together perfectly. She is getting along with the other dog and the rest of the family. She is also getting lots of attention and love from everyone. Finnegan Dowling explained that there’s a lot to learn from the funny-looking dog. “It doesn’t occur to her that she is different from other puppies,” he said. “She doesn’t compare herself to others. Whatever caused her injuries, she holds no malice towards anyone for it.”
