A Finnish photographer called Lassi Rautiainen captured some amazing wildlife photographs. In Northern Finland, he discovered a female grey wolf and a male brown bear who are best friends. They spent time together every single night for the entire time he observed them.
An Odd Case
“It’s very unusual to see a bear and a wolf getting on like this,” says the photographer. Both of these creatures are hunters and tend to be isolated. Rautiainen specializes in nature photography, and this is the first time he has ever seen anything like this. In fact, this is the first case ever discovered in Europe. The animals seemed comfortable and safe with each other. They were so close that they even shared food with each other.

They Found Each Other
Rautiainen photographed them on a daily basis. They did not leave each other’s side from 8 pm to 4 am. “No-one can know exactly why or how the young wolf and bear became friends,” Rautiainen says. “I think that perhaps they were both alone and they were young and a bit unsure of how to survive alone…It is nice to share rare events in the wild that you would never expect to see.”

An Incredible Find
When Rautiainen saw the two interacting, he knew that it would be a perfect story to share. He photographed the two for ten straight days. “When I realised that no one had observed bears and wolves living near each other and becoming friends in Europe, I concentrated more and more on getting pictures to show what can happen in nature,” he said.
