Global life expectancy for children born in 2015 was between 71.4 years and 73.8 years for women and 69.1 for men. Out of all the WHO regions, Africa stood out the most. The report credits the region\u2019s dramatic improvement to better child survival and better treatment of disease.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>More access to medical care<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the 1990s, life expectancy sharply declined in Africa due to the AIDS epidemic. The recent gains between 2000 and 2015 reversed the declines experienced during the epidemic. The continent has made major strides in battling HIV\/AIDS. During the last 15 years, access to antiretrovirals needed to treat the disease has expanded. There have been major improvements against fighting malaria as well. The WHO stated that there has been an increased use of \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">insecticide-treated bed-nets, indoor residual spraying, rapid diagnostic testing and artemisinin-based combination therapies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d Malaria mortality rates have fallen by 66% in every age category. More women are giving births in facilities and with skilled medical professionals present. Venant Habarugira of The National Institute of Statistics said: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;Skilled assistance during delivery increased from 39 percent in 2005 to 91 percent in 2014-15 while facility-based deliveries have greatly increased from 28 per cent to 91 per cent in 2014-15.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Giving birth in a facility with skilled assistance ensures a greater chance of survival for both the mother and the child. \u00a0Infant mortality rates in Rwanda have fallen from 86 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2005 to 32 in 2014-15. \u00a0The under-five mortality rate fell from 152 \u00a0deaths per 1,000 live births to 50 deaths per 1,000 live births. \u00a0And the maternal mortality rate fell from 476 deaths per 1,000 live births to 210 deaths per 1,000 live births.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16004\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16004\" style=\"width: 707px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-16004\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/05\/young_mother_klashorst.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"707\" height=\"1046\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/05\/young_mother_klashorst.jpg 692w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/05\/young_mother_klashorst-405x600.jpg 405w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/05\/young_mother_klashorst-600x888.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/05\/young_mother_klashorst-85x126.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/6\/63\/Young_mother_(Klashorst).jpg\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>More work to do<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While significant progress has been made, there is still plenty of work to do. The country with the lowest life expectancy in the world is still in Africa. Sierra Leone has a life expectancy of 50.8 years for women and 49.3 years for men. And in 22 sub-Saharan African countries, newborns have a life expectancy of under 60 years. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe world has made great strides in reducing the needless suffering and premature deaths that arise from preventable and treatable diseases,\u201d said <\/strong>Dr<strong> Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO. \u201cBut the gains have been uneven. Supporting countries to move towards universal health coverage based on strong primary care is the best thing we can do to make sure no-one is left<\/strong> <strong>behind.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16005\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16005\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img
