Awareness of mental health treatment is low, as according to traditional beliefs, patients suffer from a spiritual sickness rather than a medical one. The mentally ill are often ostracized from their families communities and do not receive proper treatment.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Locked up and forgotten<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The problem in Kenya is so dire<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that a CNN documentary was made about mental health in the country<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The piece, called \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Locked Up and Forgotten<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d stated that there are an estimated 3 million Kenyans living with intellectual and mental disabilities. Nevertheless, according to CNN:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;Families are struggling to cope with their loved ones, receiving little help from the state and facing massive stigma from society.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some may even misinterpret a mental illness as a curse and turn to religious leaders or traditional healers to pray the ailment away.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15449\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15449\" style=\"width: 716px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-15449\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/1646159.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"716\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/1646159.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/1646159-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/1646159-85x48.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15449\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/a1.am\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/node\/public\/news\/en\/2016\/04\/18\/1646159.jpg?itok=wW0YnyQ0\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Out of sight, out of mind<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Accomplished physiatrist Dr. Frank Njenga said that the scale of the situation is catastrophic. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cWe as a people have perfected the system of hiding our friends, relatives and other loved ones who have intellectual disability away from sight. Out of sight, out of mind, no funding, neglected completely,\u201d he said.<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He directed much of the blame towards the Kenyan government, which spends less than 1% of the health budget on treating mental illness. The facility is short on nurses, specialist psychiatrists, medical social workers, pharmacists, occupational therapists, water, and medicines. Medical Superintendent Julius Ogato claimed that the hospital does not have a single clinical psychologist.
