A\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/media\/files\/Beyond_Chibok.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">report released by UNICEF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0reveals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0that the terrorist group\u2019s violence against children has gotten even worse over the last two years, and the world has barely noticed it. The report, entitled Beyond Chibok, states that at least 1.3 million children throughout four countries in the Lake Chad region have been affected by Boko Haram\u2019s violence since 2014. The study showed a disturbing new trend: the militant group is using more children as suicide bombers than ever before.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>One of the biggest displacement crises in Africa<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boko Haram\u2019s path of destruction has uprooted millions of people from their homes. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe Boko Haram insurgency has triggered the displacement of 2.3 million people since May 2013,\u201d UNICEF found. \u201cHit-and-run attacks and suicide bombings are depriving people of essential services, destroying vital infrastructure and sowing fear. In North-East Nigeria, about 90 per cent of displaced families are sheltered by some of the world\u2019s poorest communities, placing additional strain on already limited resources.\u201d \u00a0Children are especially affected &#8211; \u201cIn just one year, the number of displaced children increased by over 60 per cent, from 800,000 to 1.3 million children. This is one of the fastest growing displacement crises in Africa.\u201d \u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15310\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15310\" style=\"width: 716px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-15310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/maxresdefault-6.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"716\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/maxresdefault-6.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/maxresdefault-6-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/maxresdefault-6-85x48.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/oOhSU4mAF_A\/maxresdefault.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Their stories are barely told<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In areas affected by Boko Haram, schools are either destroyed or closed and families are separated. This leaves these displaced children vulnerable to exploitation from Boko Haram. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cScores have been separated from their families and subjected to exploitation, <\/strong>abuse<strong> and recruitment by armed groups. Some have even been used to carry out suicide bombings. Yet, their stories are barely told,\u201d the report state<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">s.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boys are forced to fight for the terrorist group and they must attack their families to show their loyalty. Girls are often forced to marry to fighters and are exposed to sexual and domestic violence. And others are forced to give up their lives to become suicide bombers.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15311\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15311\" style=\"width: 703px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-15311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"703\" height=\"527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/hqdefault.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/hqdefault-85x64.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 703px) 100vw, 703px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/QqdmjWeGnzY\/hqdefault.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Child suicide bombers\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The number of children used to detonate bombs was 11 times higher than that of last year. In the previous year, there were 4 child suicide bombings and in 2015, there were 44 of them. About one in every five suicide bombers from Boko Haram is a child. Children as young as eight years old have been used. About 75% of the child suicide bombers were female. Girls are more often chosen to be suicide bombers since they are less likely to cause suspicion. The children are usually drugged and then have the bombs strapped onto them. Some of the younger children used may not have even known that they were<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0carrying a bomb\u00a0until they were detonated remotely. The communities affected by Boko Haram have concluded that they cannot trust anyone &#8211; not even children. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0&#8220;As &#8216;suicide&#8217; attacks involving children become commonplace, some communities are starting to see children as threats to their safety,&#8221; Manuel Fontaine of UNICEF said. &#8220;This suspicion towards children can have destructive consequences; how can a community rebuild itself when it is casting out its own sisters, daughters and mothers?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15313\"
