There are several contributing factors to this global increase: population growth, higher average lifespan, rising incomes, urbanisation, and lifestyle changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>A global problem<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The older people have a higher risk of developing diabetes. Since global population and average lifespan have both increased, there are more individuals in the world who are at risk of being diagnosed with the disease. However, population growth only contributes to 40% of the global increase. There is an increasing number of younger people who are also developing diabetes. This is partially caused by globalisation and urbanisation. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cHealthy choices about food and physical activity are difficult to make as these are inaccessible in the new environment people find themselves in. Indigenous diets of populations have changed to more high-calorie refined carbohydrates and fat which are readily accessible and cost less than healthier options,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/the-conversation-africa\/diet-and-lack-of-exercise_b_9631374.html\">The Huffington Post stated<\/a>. \u00a0\u201cOccupational patterns have also changed leading to physical inactivity and a sedentary population.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15247\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15247\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15247\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/ath_diabetes4.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/ath_diabetes4.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/ath_diabetes4-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/ath_diabetes4-85x48.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15247\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roche.com\/ath_diabetes4.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Rising obesity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The report states that the global rise in diabetes is \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mirroring a rise in overweight and obesity. Prevalence is growing most rapidly in low- and middle-income countries<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d Being overweight or obese strongly increases one\u2019s risk of having diabetes. And \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">being overweight or obese has increased in almost all countries<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d Income and urbanisation levels are contributing factors to the rise of the disease. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe proportion of people who are overweight or obese increases with country income level. High- and middle-income countries have more than double the overweight and obesity prevalence of low-income countries.\u201d \u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These changes in lifestyle mean that people are not walking as much as they used to, and many jobs require employees to sit down all day.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0<\/span><strong>\u201c&#8230;The prevalence of physical inactivity globally is of increasing concern. In 2010, the latest year for which data are available, just under a quarter of all adults aged over 18 years did not meet the minimum recommendation for physical activity per week and were classified as insufficiently physically active.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Changes in diets are also a problem.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/fast-food-africa\">Fast food chains have been flocking to African countries<\/a>, and f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or people who are working all day, fast food is a cheaper and more convenient option. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15248\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15248\" style=\"width: 712px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-15248\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/diabesity.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"712\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/diabesity.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/diabesity-600x360.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/diabesity-450x270.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/diabesity-150x90.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/diabesity-85x51.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15248\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wisequacks.org\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/diabesity.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>The specific challenges facing Africa<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While upper-middle income and high-income countries have higher rates of diabetes, they also have the necessary health care infrastructure to properly handle the problem. Simply diagnosing the disease has proved difficult for developing countries. The WHO had very little data for Type 1 diabetes for sub-Saharan Africa therefore, it is impossible to know how many people are affected. Those living with the disease may not even know it, as the WHO stated:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong> \u201ca recent review of data from seven countries found that between 24% and 62% of people with diabetes were undiagnosed and untreated.\u201d \u00a0The report also noted that \u201cdistinguishing between type 1 and type 2 diabetes is not always easy as it often requires relatively sophisticated laboratory tests for pancreas function.\u201d \u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Countries in the developing world are often already burdened by
