He is trying to improve the damaged image of the Nigerian police force <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/explore\/tags\/policeisyourfriend\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with the hashtag #policeisyourfriend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The hashtag has hundreds of posts on Instagram, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Giwa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has over ten thousand followers<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on the social media site.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Corruption in the force<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Corruption plagues the Nigerian police force. One of the most problematic practices is demanding payment for bail, even if the bond states that bail is free. A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2010\/08\/17\/nigeria-corruption-fueling-police-abuses\">2010 report<\/a>\u00a0published<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by Human Rights Watch found that:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cwidespread corruption in the Nigeria Police Force is fueling abuses against ordinary citizens and severely undermining the rule of law in Nigeria,\u201d with extortion and bribery being the biggest issues. \u00a0\u201cOn a daily basis, countless Nigerians traveling on the country&#8217;s roads, buying or selling at markets, running daily errands, or working in their offices are accosted by armed police officers demanding bribes. To extort money, these officers frequently threaten victims and commit human rights abuses.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inspector-General of Police Solomon Ehijiator Arase has been cracking down on corruption.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanguardngr.com\/2016\/02\/corruption-in-police-arase-dismisses-51-officers-demotes-56\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0According to the press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, between May and November 2015, 51 policemen were dismissed due to corrupt practices. Another 56 officers were reprimanded and demoted. He shares photos of himself and other in uniform with inspiring captions. In short, some by mere seeing a policeman they just wish I&#8217;d burn in hell!!\u201d he shared. \u201cMost tolerate me and realize that I am there for a reason&#8230; It&#8217;s my job! [Being] a cop teaches me to count my daily blessings!
