Unfortunately, their governing bodies are plagued by corruption. One particular scandal has shaken the foundations of athletics in the country. Officials from Athletics Kenya, the country&#8217;s governing body for track and field, are accused of pocketing $500,000 from Nike in bribes. Investigators are not sure whether the officials acted on their own, or whether they were bribed by the company.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A suspicious contract<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A contract between Nike and Athletics Kenya shows a one-time $500,000 commitment bonus. John Githongo, a consultant and big anti-corruption voice in Kenya, said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong> \u201cWhenever I see the words \u2018commitment fees,\u2019 \u2018commitment bonuses,\u2019 \u2018access fees,\u2019 \u2018access bonuses,\u2019 that for me raises a red flag. \u00a0It\u2019s language used to dress up bribes traditionally.\u201d \u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This contract was created after Athletics Kenya was negotiating a sponsorship deal with Chinese brand the Li-Ning Company. Analysts believe that Nike may have panicked\u00a0since they could not afford to lose the Kenyan athletes. The ethics committee of the IAAF, the international governing body for the sport of athletics, suspended all three officials accused of taking the money from Nike: Athletics Kenya president Isaiah Kiplagat, vice president David Okeyo, and 2015 world championships team leader Joseph Kinyua.\u00a0Okeyo claimed the contract was &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">executed with integrity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8221; and he did nothing wrong. In addition to the Nike scandal, the men are also being investigated over athletes accused of doping. The company claims that the money given to Athletics Kenya was intended to help athletes. They released a short statement that they \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are cooperating with the local authorities in their investigation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d Kenyan authorities are saying otherwise. Investigators with Kenya\u2019s Directorate of Criminal Investigations said that Nike is refusing to give out any more information or discuss details of the contract with Athletics Kenya. Many are wondering whether Nike purposefully allowed officials to take the money or not. One of the investigators,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/06\/world\/africa\/nike-under-scrutiny-as-payments-for-kenya-runners-are-drained.html?ref=africa&amp;_r=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> speaking anonymously to the New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong> \u201cWhy was such a huge sum of money paid as commitment? \u00a0It\u2019s only Nike who can tell us.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14486\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14486\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/nike_kenyarunners_004_334_670.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"670\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/nike_kenyarunners_004_334_670.jpg 670w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/nike_kenyarunners_004_334_670-600x337.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/nike_kenyarunners_004_334_670-85x48.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14486\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/payload371.cargocollective.com\/1\/18\/586972\/9734554\/Nike_KenyaRunners_004_334_670.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Athletes are protesting<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When the allegations were made public, many Kenya\u2019s athletes were furious. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2015\/nov\/23\/athletes-storm-athletics-kenya-protest\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Guardian reported in late November <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that a group of 40-50 stormed the Nairobi headquarters of the Kenyan athletics\u2019 governing body in protest. The sit-in was put together by the Professional Athletes\u2019 Association of Kenya. In a statement, the association said the purpose of the demonstration was \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">taking united action to bring sanity to Athletics Kenya management and leadership<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d The athletes were carrying signs that said \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Time for the corrupt to go home<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We must have a new constitution<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d \u00a0Julius Ndwegwa, the leader of the protest, called for Kiplagat\u2019s resignation. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cEverybody is complaining against him,\u201d he said. \u201cThe doping menace was caused by him under his office so we want to see a clean sport and we need change to happen with immediate effect. We are looking forward to being led by athletes, those who understand the pain of running.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">400m hurdles world champion Nicholas Bett <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nicholas.bett.374?fref=ts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">shared his opinion on Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong> \u201cIsaiah Kiplagat must go, we are tired of his leadership, we need change.\u201d Kiplagat\u2019s response to the protest was \u201cSerious athletes are training.
