This will facilitate international travel as well as help the region become more integrated.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Leaders coming together<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 17th OrdinaryA took place on March 2nd. It was hosted by the chairman, Tanzania\u2019s President John Magufuli, and was held in Arusha. Presidents Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi, and Salva Kiir of South Sudan were all in attendance. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cAs one of the fastest growing regional economic blocs in the world, the EAC is widening and deepening co-operation among the Partner States in various key spheres for their mutual benefit. These spheres include political, economic and social,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eac.int\/\">the EAC website states<\/a>. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14439\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14439\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/eacheads.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"700\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/eacheads.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/eacheads-600x322.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/eacheads-85x46.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/africanarguments.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/EACheads.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Regional integration<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The representatives of each country came together and discussed the launch of the electronic passports for all of the region\u2019s citizens. The new passports will give their citizens more free movement; they will be able to travel across the region as well as internationally. Travelling with the old EAC document was restricted to the five EAC member states. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eac.int\/news-and-media\/statements\/20160302\/joint-communique-17th-ordinary-summit-east-african-community-heads-state\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A statement released by the EAC\u2019s Secretariat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> says that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the heads of state \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">directed that commencement of issuance of the EA e-passport takes effect from 1st January, 2017; and implement the phase out programme for the current East African and national passports from 1st January, 2017 to 31st December, 2018<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0The electronic passport will have advanced technology to reinforce national security systems and have a secure e-immigration network. Having a common passport will help increase the region\u2019s integration, which is one of the EAC\u2019s main goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cAt the moment, the regional integration process is in full swing as reflected by the encouraging progress of the East African Customs Union, the establishment of the Common Market in 2010 and the implementation of the East African Monetary Union Protocol,\u201d the site says.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14440\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14440\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/eac-passport.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"700\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/eac-passport.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/eac-passport-600x348.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/eac-passport-85x49.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14440\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imvahonshya.co.rw\/IMG\/jpg\/eac-passport.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Other important subjects were discussed<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The passport is just one of many important matters the EAC discussed at the summit. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newvision.co.ug\/new_vision\/news\/1418501\/eac-leaders-launch-regional-passports\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to New Vision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, representatives went over \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">council reports related to the reduction of exportation of used cars into the members states, promotion of textile and leather industries and forge ways of putting a ban on importation of used clothes, shoes and other leather products so that they can boost local leather industries<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d The statement from the Secretariat said other issues were harmonising telephone rates, setting up a vehicle assembly plant within the region, and council reports on \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Model, Structure and Action Plan of the EAC Political Federation; Implementation of the Framework for Harmonized EAC Roaming Charges; Modalities for Promotion of Motor Vehicle Assembly in the region and Reduction of the Importation of Used Motor Vehicles from Outside the Community<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d South Sudan was also officially admitted as a member of the EAC. Somalia had also hoped to be admitted, but the country had not met the required verification exercise.
