The middle class is growing and urbanisation levels are improving, allowing the fast-food business to become a billion dollar industry.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>American brands are flocking to the continent<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American-owned international fast-food chains have performed very well in Africa. The biggest success is currently KFC &#8211; it has 771 locations in South Africa alone. There are about 1,000 stores spread throughout Kenya, Nigeria, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi, Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Uganda. McDonald\u2019s also has a strong presence in South Africa and in Mauritius. The first Burger King store in Cape Town opened to a crowd so large that the line went around the block. Brent Omdahl, deputy senior commercial officer at the US Commercial Service, noted that this trend is good commercial diplomacy for the U.S.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cPeople look at McDonald\u2019s here in South Africa and they know that\u2019s a little slice of America,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These chains will usually have dishes inspired by local cuisine on their menus.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14404\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14404\" style=\"width: 705px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-14404\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/bq6rspuicaaq1v0.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"705\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/bq6rspuicaaq1v0.jpg 598w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/bq6rspuicaaq1v0-85x56.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 705px) 100vw, 705px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14404\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/Bq6rspuIcAAQ1V0.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>There are also successful local restaurants<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">U.S. brands are not the only ones performing well. In South Africa for instance, several local brands have become national and international successes. The country\u2019s most successful franchise is Nando\u2019s. It has more than 1,000 stores in 30 countries, spanning five continents. The locations in the UK have been made popular by celebrities, such as David Beckham. Ocean Basket, a seafood fast-food chain, began in Pretoria and now has 130 locations across the continent.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14401\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14401\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14401\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/nandos.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"700\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/nandos.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/nandos-600x413.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/nandos-85x59.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14401\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoteliermiddleeast.com\/pictures\/nandos.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Lifestyle is changing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many African countries have a rising middle class, raising incomes, and are experiencing changes in their population&#8217;s lifestyle. An increasing number of locals have disposable incomes and are in need of quick food they can take to-go. According to Scott Lehr, who is a senior vice-president for International Franchise Association:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cAt the end of every trade mission we ask our members which markets they would wish to enter next. Given the impressive economic growth across Africa and the infrastructure in South Africa, they voted for Africa by a landslide.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">International Franchise Association works with brands such as Dairy Queen, Hardee&#8217;s, Wing Zone and Moe\u2019s Southwest Grill.
