But you would not be able to tell just by looking at them. They have completely different skin tones, eye colors, and hair textures. They look so different from each other that they are often mistaken for step-sisters.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Doctors were shocked<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The parents are Tafadzwa Madzimbamuto, 40, and Libby Appleby, 37. Prior to delivering the twins, Libby was told that she would need to mark them with ink to tell them apart. That turned out not to be necessary. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cWhen they were born, we were flabbergasted, even the doctors couldn&#8217;t believe it,\u201d she recalled. She added that the medics gasped when they delivered the girls. \u201cThey look like<\/strong> <strong>they&#8217;re different races. Amelia is the spitting image of her<\/strong> <strong>dad, while Jasmine is a mini version of me.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14386\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14386\" style=\"width: 702px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-14386\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/578983.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"702\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/578983.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/578983-600x375.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/578983-85x53.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dayan.ir\/images\/news\/social\/578983.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>One in a million<\/strong><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cWe put them next to each other in a cot and couldn&#8217;t believe how different they were. \u00a0Amelia was so much darker than Jasmine, they barely even looked related,\u201d Libby said. \u00a0\u201cDoctors told us the chances of conceiving mixed race twins are one in a million.\u201d \u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To confirm that they were truly identical, a sample of her placenta was taken. There are several genes controlling skin color. Usually, identical twins completely share them.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;<strong>\u00a0an exception might be when a change in one of these happens after the twins separate in very early development &#8211; so called somatic mutation,\u201d Steves said. \u00a0&#8220;Alternatively, sometimes markers on the DNA which influence the extent to which the DNA is expressed can be different in the twins. We do have some evidence that skin colour is subject to this kind of &#8216;epigenetic&#8217; control.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14388\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14388\" style=\"width: 703px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-14388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/31812b9800000578-3461832-image-a-29_1456312334029.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"703\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/31812b9800000578-3461832-image-a-29_1456312334029.jpg 634w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/31812b9800000578-3461832-image-a-29_1456312334029-600x415.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/31812b9800000578-3461832-image-a-29_1456312334029-85x59.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 703px) 100vw, 703px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2016\/02\/24\/11\/31812B9800000578-3461832-image-a-29_1456312334029.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Very unusual<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Steves said one last possibility could be: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;&#8230; if the\u00a0twins have been exposed to different environments, they may differ in skin colour due to this &#8211; for example if one has had greater sun exposure or has developed a condition where the pigmented cells are affected, which may happen to one just by chance.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But even with these possibilities, most twins still have a similar skin color. Libby said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong> &#8220;We get a lot of funny looks when we tell people the girls are actually identical.
