Zuma said that the auditor-general and finance minister should determine the exact amount he should pay back. There will be a hearing about his spending next week; this is likely an effort to defuse some of the controversies.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Accused of misappropriating government funds<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Public protector Thulisile Madonsela reported in 2014 that Zuma misappropriated government funds. She accused the president of using $23 million of government money to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/zuma-firepool\">make renovations to his private home<\/a> in a manner that was \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">inconsistent with his office<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d Zuma made the renovations not long after he took office in 2009. He added a swimming pool, a visitor center, a helipad, a cattle enclosure, an amphitheater, three houses for employees, and a chicken coop. The government tried to argue that the additions were needed for security; they even tried to characterize the pool as a firefighting tool. Zuma also claimed that he paid for the upgrades with his own money. In 2012, complaints were finally filed with the public protector. The opposition parties Democratic Alliance (DA) and Julius Malema&#8217;s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) both called for a corruption investigation. Madonsela said the president \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">benefited unduly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d and failed to stop the contractors from adding unnecessary costs. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13887\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13887\" style=\"width: 714px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-13887\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/nkandlazuma.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"714\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/nkandlazuma.jpg 567w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/nkandlazuma-85x54.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13887\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatchlive.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/nkandlazuma.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Not admitting fault<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though the president has offered to repay some of the money, he is still not admitting any fault in the situation. A statement released on his website said the report simply found:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cirregularities that occurred in the course of upgrades by the Department of Public Works, in liaison with other departments, to the traditional family home the President has had at Nkandla for many years..\u201d but that \u201cthe report specifically found no wrongdoing of any kind by the President. It also found no \u00a0benefit for which the President could to any degree be required to compensate the state in relation to nearly all aspects of the project.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13888\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13888\" style=\"width: 706px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-13888\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/cfc4oflxiaanrzy.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"706\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/cfc4oflxiaanrzy.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/cfc4oflxiaanrzy-85x64.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CFc4ofLXIAAnrzY.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Political controversy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The DA and the EFF asked the Constitutional Court to review the president\u2019s spending and respond to the public protector\u2019s accusations. If this was the president\u2019s attempt to stop the hearing, it has failed. The DA released a statement in which it notes the president\u2019s offer, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">but contends that the contents of his settlement offer do not comply with the remedial actions as ordered by the Public Protector in her report\u2026<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d They will also argue that:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong> \u201cPresident Zuma\u2019s failure to engage rationally with the Public Protector\u2019s findings and remedial action pertaining to him was manifestly irrational, illegal and unconstitutional.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The opposition parties are proceeding with their case; the court will hear it on February 9th. This is two days before the president\u2019s State of the Nation address. \u00a0At last year\u2019s address, protesters chanting \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pay back the
