She has already received death threats but refuses to back down.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A hard life<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dayib grew up as a refugee. She was born to Somali parents in Kenya. During her childhood, her family went back and forth between the two countries. Because they were constantly moving, Dayib had less than five years of primary schooling. She did not become literate until she turned 14. Due to tensions between Kenya and Somalia, her family was not accepted in the Kenyan society; they were eventually forced to leave. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cOne of my earliest memories of being a second-class citizen, an unwanted person, a displaced person, was when they handed me a small card that said, \u2018Go home,\u2019\u201d she remembered. \u201cAnd that was the boarding pass that I used to get on Somali Airlines to leave Kenya.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13762\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13762\" style=\"width: 712px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-13762\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/hks_dayib_bostonglobe011216.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"712\" height=\"521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/hks_dayib_bostonglobe011216.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/hks_dayib_bostonglobe011216-600x439.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/hks_dayib_bostonglobe011216-85x62.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13762\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/c.o0bg.com\/rf\/image_960w\/Boston\/2011-2020\/2016\/01\/13\/BostonGlobe.com\/EditorialOpinion\/Images\/HKS_Dayib_BostonGlobe011216.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>She wanted to help her country<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When civil war broke out in Somalia, Finland offered asylum to refugees.\u00a0Dayib was able to get a good and consistent education, which she said emancipated her. She became a nurse, settled down, and started a family. But she still did not feel completely accepted in society. Then, when she was watching television, she saw a story about a Somali woman who travelled miles on foot to reach a healthcare professional. The woman was trying to save her child, but it passed away during the gruelling trip. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cI remember thinking to myself, why is that?\u201d Dayib said. \u201cIs it fair that she should go through what she\u2019s going through while I am enjoying myself? I have everything I need, yet I am able to help because I\u2019m a healthcare practitioner.\u201d \u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2005, she made a life-changing decision: she left her family in Finland and moved back to Somalia. Somalia\u2019s government is plagued by corruption. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0\u201cEven using the term government is questionable in Somalia,\u201d <\/strong>Dayib<strong> said. \u201cThis is not a government, this is a bunch of people who were given positions based on clans.\u201d<\/strong> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 2016 elections are going to be the first democratic elections in Somalia since 1967, and the government has already tried postponing them. Dayib plans to focus her policies on security and economic development. Then, of course, there is the additional struggle of being a woman. She believes that having a female president would bring positive change to the country. Others disagree &#8211; she has already been receiving threats. But she will not be intimated. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0&#8220;You know you&#8217;re going <\/strong>into<strong> a boxing match even though your hands are tied behind your back. \u00a0The people have to have a say,\u201d she said.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13760\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13760\" style=\"width: 703px\"
