And, just like last year, every acting nominee is white. Not a single minority was nominated in any of the four acting categories. Meaning, the last 40 Oscar acting nominees have been white. This has prompted the hashtag <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/oscarssowhite\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">#OscarsSoWhite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to resurface online.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Less minorities than last year<\/h2>\n<p>The hashtag was created last year by editor April Reign. When she saw the nominees, she <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReignOfApril?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s actually worse than last year. Best Documentary and Best Original Screenplay. That&#8217;s it. #OscarsSoWhite.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Many were expecting Idris Elba to be nominated<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/street-vendor\" target=\"_blank\"> for his role<\/a> in <i>Beasts of No Nation<\/i> or Will Smith to be recognized for his work in <i>Concussion<\/i>. But neither made the cut. Michael B. Jordan was the lead in actor in <i>Creed<\/i>; yet, while Stallone was nominated, Jordan was not. Jason Mitchell in <i>Straight Outta Compton<\/i> was also passed over.\u00a0<i>Beasts of No Nation, Concussion, <\/i>and <i>Straight Outta Compton<\/i> all did well at the box office and received good reviews. Some people\u00a0believe\u00a0that this is the source of the problem. Even the president of the Academy, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, expressed some disappointment in the choices. She admitted that the Academy needs to speed up efforts to increase diversity.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0<strong>\u201cOf course I am disappointed, but this is not to take away from the greatness [of the films nominated],\u201d she said. \u00a0She also claimed that \u201cThe Academy has no power over Hollywood. We have nothing to do with hiring. [\u2026] What we can do, however, is to get them to widen their normal stream of thought.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2014,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpaa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/MPAA-Theatrical-Market-Statistics-2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> minorities made up 46%<\/a> of U.S. moviegoers. However, in the top 100-grossing movies of 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/rundown\/30000-hollywood-film-characters-heres-many-werent-white\/\" target=\"_blank\">about 75% of the characters were white<\/a>.
