While the prevalence of albinism is only one in 20,000 in Europe and the United States, it is much higher in many African nations. In some parts of sub-Saharan Africa albinism is 1 in 5,000, and the rates in parts of Southern Africa are as high as 1 in 1,000. Albinos often face alienation and persecution in their societies.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>It affects several countries<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24300644\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> found that albino children:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong> &#8220;&#8230;experienced alienation, avoided social interactions and were less emotionally stable. \u00a0Furthermore, affected individuals were less likely to complete schooling, find employment, and find partners.&#8221; <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And it can be even worse than that: in some countries, like Tanzania and Burundi, albinos are believed to hold magical properties. Their body parts are worth thousands of dollars on the black market and are sold to witchdoctors who use them to create potions. National Geographic estimates that in Tanzania, a set of albino body parts &#8211; including all four limbs, genitals, ears, tongue and nose &#8211; is worth $75,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12995\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12995\" style=\"width: 709px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-12995\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/08e1871170271af9fbd96ce85046abc9-1.jpeg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"709\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/08e1871170271af9fbd96ce85046abc9-1.jpeg 650w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/08e1871170271af9fbd96ce85046abc9-1-600x338.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/08e1871170271af9fbd96ce85046abc9-1-85x48.jpeg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12995\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.newsapi.com.au\/image\/v1\/08e1871170271af9fbd96ce85046abc9\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">{adinserter CNP5}<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Children are more vulnerable to attack<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/HRBodies\/HRC\/RegularSessions\/Session24\/Documents\/A_HRC_24_57_ENG.doc\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2013 report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the U.N. Human Rights Council stated that children are often the victims of these attacks. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cSome even believe that the witchcraft ritual is more powerful if the victim screams during the amputation, so body parts are often cut from live victims, especially children,\u201d the report said. \u201cThe use of children is likely linked to the pursuit of innocence which, it is believed, enhances the potency of the witchcraft ritual. In January of this year, a 11-year-old girl in Malawi was kidnapped by her uncle who found out that he could earn $6,500 for her body parts. During that same month, two more albino children were kidnapped and a 68-year-old woman was found dead and dismembered. By March, six more attacks were reported in the country. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cAs a result, many people with albinism are living in abject fear,\u201d al-Hussein said. \u00a0\u201cSome no longer dare to go outside, and children with albinism have stopped attending school.\u201d \u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A couple of factors may have contributed to this. \u00a0Erick Kabendera, a Tanzanian journalist, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2013\/10\/131011-albino-killings-witch-doctors-tanzania-superstition\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Geographic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that politicians are part of the problem. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cIf a politician needs to win an election, they will consult a witch doctor, but then politicians will blame the fishermen\u201d for murdered albinos,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12994\"
