She won the 2007 Orange prize for her novel <em>Half of a Yellow Sun<\/em> and became famous for her award winning 2012 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hg3umXU_qWc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TED talk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> entitled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We Should All Be Feminists. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The talk has over 2 million views on YouTube and was notably sampled by Beyonc\u00e9 in her song \u201cFlawless.\u201d Adichie is hoping to spark even more global discussions about gender. The essay adapted from her TED talk, is being distributed in Swedish high schools. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sverigeskvinnolobby.se\/en\/we-should-all-be-feminists-chimamanda-ngozi-adichies-book-is-distributed-as-a-gift-to-all-swedish-high-schools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Swedish Women\u2019s Lobby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and publisher Albert Bonniers F\u00f6rlag are launching the project at Norra Real high school in Stockholm this week. They hope that the book will \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">work as a stepping stone for a discussion about gender equality and feminism<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The definition of a feminist<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In her essay, Adichie said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong> \u201cMy own definition of a feminist is a man or a woman who says, \u2018Yes, there\u2019s a problem with gender as it is today and we must fix it, we must do better. All of us, women and men, must do better.\u201d She added \u201cSome people ask: \u2018Why the word feminist? Why not just say you are a believer in human rights, or something like that?\u2019 Because that would be dishonest. \u00a0Feminism is, of course, part of human rights in general \u2013 but to choose to use the vague expression human rights is to deny the specific and particular problem of gender. Her essay criticizes modern masculinity as well &#8211; \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We teach boys to be afraid of fear, of weakness, of vulnerability<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We teach them to mask their true selves, because they have to be, in Nigerian-speak \u2013 a hard man<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d To her, feminism is about justice. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cI\u2019m a feminist because I want to live in a world that is more just. I\u2019m a feminist because I want to live in a world where a woman is never told that she can or cannot or should or should not do anything because she is a woman. I want to live in a world where men and women are happier. Where they are not constrained by gender roles. I want to live in a world where men and women are truly equal. I don\u2019t think I knew the word at all. But I was a feminist\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I hope that the 16-year-olds that will read this book in Sweden will also decide that they\u2019re feminists. Mostly, I hope very soon that one day we will not need to be feminists.
