Gambia is the new member of the group. It is not clear when the law will be passed but Yahya Jammeh seemed pretty determined to put an end to this practice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Saving Gambian women<\/h2>\n<p>Female genital mutilation affects 130 million women in Africa and in the Middle East and according to a UNICEF report,\u00a0<a class=\" u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/media\/files\/UNICEF_FGM_report_July_2013_Hi_res.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">76% of Gambian women have been subject to the procedure.<\/a>\u00a0Jaha Dukureh, an anti-female genital mutilation activist\u00a0said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cI\u2019m really amazed that the president did this. I didn\u2019t expect this in a million years. The operation is performed on females who are often very young. There are four different types of procedures, and they all have one thing in common: the removal of the labia or clitoris. The practice was originally created in order to \u201ccleanse\u201d women of desire with the intention to keep them pure. Instead, it causes several health issues which can be fatal. They include\u00a0urinary problems, intense pain in the\u00a0pelvic floor, suffering from childbirth complications later in life, or even death.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12040\"
