The children&#8217;s futures are uncertain and they are vulnerable to abuse, and exploitation.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The children often go unprotected<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Human Rights Watch published a 71-page report titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hrw.org\/node\/127138\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c\u2018Where Do You Want Us to Go?\u2019 Abuses against Street Children in Uganda\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which documents human rights violations against street children by police and local government officials as well as abuses by members of the community and older homeless children and adults. The report states:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cPolice and other officials have beaten, extorted money from, and arbitrarily detained street children after targeted roundups. In police cells children have faced further beatings and forced labor, including cleaning the cells and police living quarters. On the streets, homeless adults and older children harass, threaten, beat, sexually abuse, force drugs upon, and exploit street children, often with impunity.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11622\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11622\" style=\"width: 709px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11622\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/2kids_grid7.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"709\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/2kids_grid7.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/2kids_grid7-85x56.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11622\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/pfil\/2202\/2kids_Grid7.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">{adinserter CNP5}<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>One former street kid is hoping to\u00a0make a change<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Innocent Byaruhanga, who used to live on the streets himself, is hoping that he can help turn the situation around. He is well aware of the dangers that these children face, such as substance abuse, crime, lack of nutrition, exploitation and stigmatization. In 2011, he launched Pamoja, a center that works with former street children and vulnerable youth to create shoes out of disused tires. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11618\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/by5tjinimaakfh0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"716\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/by5tjinimaakfh0.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/by5tjinimaakfh0-85x48.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Providing valuable skills to kids <\/strong><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cWhat we did was come up with [an] idea that can give skills to these children [&#8230;]\u00a0The biggest challenge that youth and former street children face is unemployment and drug abuse. They are either exploited by the drug lords or use them to enable them forget their problems. This is because they live in poor conditions and have to cope with their poverty or find a livelihood by all means available to them,\u201d\u00a0says Byaruhanga.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/innocent.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"706\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/innocent.jpg 634w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/innocent-600x341.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/innocent-85x48.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Turning trash into treasure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Byaruhanga was trying to find the best solution:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cWe came out with an idea of making shoes and we said: &#8216; what can we do that people are not doing? \u00a0What can we do that will attract people to buy? What can we do in order that will earn us money at a quicker speed and at the same time which is very cheap?&#8217;\u201d \u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He found his answer when he noticed how many ruined tires were scattered around the slums. Byaruhanga came up with the idea of turning trash into treasure:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cWe want to use the things that people don\u2019t see as valuable. Number one: Ugandan-made; two: Ugandan-owned; three: made from the thing that people don\u2019t see; four: we want to do something that is very durable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11620\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/140917152835-shoes-horizontal-gallery.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"704\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/140917152835-shoes-horizontal-gallery.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/140917152835-shoes-horizontal-gallery-600x346.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/140917152835-shoes-horizontal-gallery-85x49.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 704px) 100vw, 704px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Empowering the youth in Uganda<\/strong><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe work we are doing is not only help us to create employments for vulnerable children. We also want to protect the environment,\u201d Byaruhanga shares.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The kids are taught how to cut and manufacture the shoes in an eco-friendly manner. Since 2011, Pamoja Center has employed and trained over 80 former street children and 37 community youth aged between 12 to 24 years old. The center shares the profits with them so they can begin to support themselves. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cWe want to surprise the entire Uganda as a nation. We want to set up an industry,\u201d Byaruhanga says. \u201cYoung people should be the ones to lead, to make decision-making.
