She used to work at the Interfaith Mediation Centre, which is an organisation was founded by a Muslim imam and a Christian pastor that addresses interreligious violence. Now, she devotes her time to speaking out against terrorist group Boko Haram in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>She survived a deadly attack<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When she was on the way to the capital of Borno State, her bus was stopped by armed men. They forced everyone off of the bus, beat the passengers with their guns, and then opened fire. Five passengers were killed in the attack. Mohammed was one of the survivors. \u00a0&#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I was praying in my mind<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I did not dare pray out loud,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8221; she says. The attack, which was terrifying, motivated her to fight against the armed group. She added<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I was in that bus and I saw hell. But it motivates me to work for peace&#8230;It motivated me to go back to the northeast. \u00a0It was something that kept on bothering me: &#8216;What do you do to conquer this?&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11313\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11313\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11313\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/3f477c721432494180b8998b147eac86_18.jpg\" alt=\"source\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/3f477c721432494180b8998b147eac86_18.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/3f477c721432494180b8998b147eac86_18-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afrizap.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/3f477c721432494180b8998b147eac86_18-85x48.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11313\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/imagecache\/mbdxxlarge\/mritems\/Images\/2015\/11\/4\/3f477c721432494180b8998b147eac86_18.jpg\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">{adinserter CNP5}<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Engaging the youth\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mohammed believes that in order to conquer the violence of these terrorist groups, people &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have to make sure their voice is lifted in such a way that they counter those violent messages and ideologies.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d With community-led efforts, like the Interfaith Mediation Centre, young people are able to build a different future. She is disturbed by the number of young men killed in these attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It became a problem for me, knowing I have a brother, I have teenage cousins, I have a son. Mohammed made the tough decision to move her two children and her father to Kaduna, a much safer area\u00a0while she moved to Yobe State. There are plenty of women speaking out, but it is not always easy. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0&#8220;Some felt I was being disrespectful, that I wasn&#8217;t being a lady, that I should be at home, married, having babies like a baby factory, but that wasn&#8217;t what I was created for,&#8221; she says. \u00a0&#8220;I am confident, I am strong, I am a Muslim, I am an anti-violent-extremism activist, I advocate against it and I will do whatever I can to stop it. A lot of time I talk in front of people and they say, &#8216;You&#8217;re a woman, you don&#8217;t need to talk.&#8217; And I say, &#8216;Yes, I will talk.&#8217; &#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure
